How to Graft Garter Stitch

I never can remember how to graft garter stitch and have to look it up somewhere. So I made this tutorial for easy reference. This method is useful for sewing together garter stitch stitches invisibly. For this technique all stitches have to be still on the needles – so called “live” stitches. For better visibility I used contrasting yarn for sewing, usually you use your working yarn, of course.

Here are my six simple steps to graft garter stitch seams together:

1. You need the same number of stitches on both needles. Thread a tapestry needle with your working yarn. Hold both knitting needles parallel.

2. Thread the working yarn as if to purl through the first stitch on the front needle, leaving the stitch on the needle. Repeat with the first stitch on the back needle.

3. Then insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit and slip this stitch off the needle.

4. Thread the needle through the new first stitch on the front needle as if to purl and leave the stitch on the needle.

5. Now insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch on the back needle as if to knit and slip this stitch off the needle.

6. Thread the needle through the new first stitch on the back needle as if to purl and leave the stitch on the needle.

Repeat steps 3 to 6 until all stitches have been worked and slipped from the needles. Weave in yarn. That’s how you graft garter stitch.
